Bandon Crossings is Getting in Shape!

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes at a golf course? Brant Hathorn, Superintendent at Bandon Crossings in Bandon, Oregon, provides an insider’s update on the seasonal maintenance at his course.

Notes From the Superintendent:

The greens are recovering from winter and aerification nicely. We have been rolling and lowering the 2015-05-29 Mowinggreensmowing heights to increase putting speeds. Our goal is to produce a consistent putting surface while maintaining healthy greens. Sometimes Mother Nature throws us a curve ball, but we will continue to do our best to create greens that run firm and true.

Spring turned to summer very quickly this year. The nice weather we had in January and February brought summer conditions about 2 months earlier than normal promoting good roll on your drives. The occasional dry spot will be inevitable, but we continue to fine tune our irrigation system for the season. We will be edging sprinkler heads regularly every 2-3 weeks to keep them functioning properly and make the yardage caps more visible.

As you know, we proudly use our own native sand at Bandon Crossings. We try our best to keep up on sand depths and weed control in our 63 bunkers. With Sand Screenerrotating bunker maintenance every 2 to 3 weeks, you may notice an occasional weed. We are also working to rebuild our sand inventory. We are currently trying to dial in our new conveyor/feeder that will help us screen our sand more efficiently. Our fairway topdressing sand is being screened first, then we will be working on greens and bunker sand. We use two different size screens for our sand supplies to produce the cleanest material possible for bunker sand and topdressing our greens. It does take time, but we think it’s worth the effort. Our apologies if you find yourself hitting out of a bunker that is a little light on sand. Be assured that it is a priority on our list of to-do’s.

Many of you may have noticed the whitish-yellow looking spots on our fairways and tees. We are applying an herbicide to remove unwanted grass and broad leaf weeds from our playing surfaces. What started as a bi-annual application has turned into annual due to the aggressive nature of Velvet Grass, which is our most menacing grassy weed. The herbicide that we use will not hurt the Ryegrass on our fairways, but it does stun the Poa Annua that we are getting more and more of. We also have to be very careful with our applications since it can severely damage the bent grass on our greens with even foot traffic from golfers. We have applied our first of two applications to all of our fairways, tees, and driving range tee. Not all areas can be addressed at the same time due to time constraints, so some areas will look different than others throughout this month. The effects of the applications will usually appear after about 7 days and the fairways should be better than ever by the end of June. One of the things golfers can do to help keep the velvet grass out of our fairways is to keep carts out of the tall grass. A lot of our tall grass is velvet grass and driving through it spreads the seed to our fairways and tees. We remain diligent to provide the best conditions for our golfers, and we appreciate any help we can get.
We look forward to seeing you all out on the course. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or catch me on the course. See you out there!
Now go play!
