Played UMD on Tuesday in a match play event and was surprised what nice shape the course was in, especially in August when it typically browns out. I decided to take my son-in-law there on Saturday, because he's never played it. Same conditions, of course, but the cost was $72 on a Saturday morning. This course is simply not worth this cost--it's more a $55-$60 dollar course, even on weekends. The good news is it was a nice pace of play with no waiting or being pushed. But with average fairways, soft (and pitted) greens, and thick uncut rough, it's overpriced. I would look for deals or coupons to get the value.

Played a tournament today, and first time playing UMD this year. Had been told it was not in good shape; however, I found it in pretty decent shape. Most of the fairways were green, although thin in some places. I only saw two holes which had some brown spots, and a couple others had new sod areas. Pretty dry for the amount of rain we've had, and the carts were scatter today. This is a nice layout, not a lot of trouble, and a couple of blind shots. Greens were in good shape and rolling pretty true--keep in mind there are a lot of subtle undulations that will take your ball in a direction you might not have anticipated. The rough was long and uncut, so hit the fairways. If they can get a little thicker grass cover in the fairways, this course would be well back on it's way to being a nice course.

Some places a bit wet, but not bad for the amount of rain/snow received. Greens slow--not mowed or rolled. Bunkers packed down and eroded from sidewalls. But, pretty playable for pre-season. Great food in the restaurant...save time to grab something to eat.

Course is looking good. Greensare in great shape and bunkers have plenty of playable sand. Fairways have filled in nicely although there are some bare spots in the rough, but you aren't supposed to be there, right.
Staff is great and if you play early and the griil isn't open, there is an excellent snack shack at the turn.

I have previously reviewed this course twice so far this year. Wasn't planning on reviewing today, but felt I needed to because some of the work they've been doing is paying off. First, the greens are in excellent condition--nice surface and running a bit on the fast side (compared to other local courses). When I pulled in this morning, they were rolling them. The fairways have improved 100% over the last time I played--no crabgrass, majority filled in (although it looks like the heat has dried a couple out), and I understand that they put down new grass, so it's taken most of the season to come in. And, the bunkers were in great shape. Kudos to the Super and groundskeeping staff, as their efforts are showing. Additionally, the restaurant has a great salad buffet. I'm glad I played today.

Played a tournament at Un. of MD today. I have always llked the layout of this course, but in recent years it has not been the best. It looks like they are doing quite a bit of work to try to make repairs and get it back in shape. Many fairways have new sod, both in the middle of the fairway as well as along the edges (some roped off). The greens were in great shape, as were most of the tee boxes. The bunkers and fairways were wet (cart path only) due to heavy rains the previous day and over night. There were a couple of fairways which were a little thin, but overall the course is coming back some. Not as nice as it was a decade ago, but hopefully on the mend. The staff is extremely nice and helpful, and the luncheon provide was spectacular! Kudos to the restaurant staff. The facility is also very nice for events. I still think this is a great course--we just need to "cut it a little slack" while they are working on it.

UMCP is usually one of my favorite courses to play in the DC area, but it is not in great condition early in the season. A couple holes are still under repair, which really takes away from the overall experience. I was pretty annoyed that they charged a near full rate with the fairways in poor condition and recently aerated greens. Even worse, the Starter got our round off to a frustrating start, rushed us to the tee (even though we were in queue 10-minutes before our tee time). After asking us if we played there before, we told him we are alums and played a couple times a year --- he still rehearsed his routine and told us to make sure we raked the sand traps. I know he's just doing his job, but that just didn't make any sense. Further, to make things worse, he told one of the guys in my group that he wasn't allowed to bring his Gatorade onto the course --- no outside beverages allowed. I understand that beer & alcohol is an issue, but Gatorade? You're charging $57 for a course that is in fair condition at this point in the golf season, and you want to make sure we're throwing extra $$$ for non-alcoholic beverages? Pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

Anyway, I'll likely return later in the year to see how the course is playing. Hopefully they'll have worked out the kinks with the Starter in conjunction with the course coming into better shape.

Not in bad shape for winter conditions, although everything but the greens were extremely wet. Couldn't be helped due to the onslaught of rain the day/night before. Drained fairly well on the hilly fairways, but of course water collected in the low spots. Greens were pretty slow and bumpy--not cut due to wet conditions. Nice day, though, and course in decent winter shape.

Course is in OK conditon. Will need some clean up before spring. Fairways and greens were spotty. Traps had good sand however. Tees are being selectively rehabbed so they should be good by spring. Limited food service in the winter.

I played in a tournament/scramble. I was really shocked at how poor the condition of the course was in. I thought that the U of M had a turf management program? There were way too many holes in the fairways and greens. I understand that the course gets a lot of play but I had heard good things about the course before I played it and had high expectations. The course has a lot of potential to be great if it was in better condition. Note: since I played for free because it was for work, I rated course value as full. I'm not sure what the cost is usually to play there.....

Beautiful day at UMCP. Tee'd off a little after 8:00 and finished just before noon. Pace was perfect! The course typically plays long, but the tees were moved up today. Tees, Fairway, Greens were in excellent condition. Traps were OK --- sand was smooth to hit out of, but they not been raked which made for some interesting lies. Overall, awesome experience. Will definitely be trying to squeeze in another early weekend round in the near future!

Haven't been to Un of MD since last year. Was surprised at the shape of the course. Tee boxes and greens were in good shape, but the fairways (almost all of them) had dirt patches and crabgrass growing, and the rough was either thick and narly or dry and burned out. It is really a shame because this course was always kept in great shape. Don't know if they lost funding or dollars have just been funneled elsewhere on campus. The bright spot is the staff and the food service--top notch.

Course is currently in rough shape. Fairways and rough are extremely patchy. Greens are a little better but were recently aerated with a variable amount of sand on different parts of the green making it impossible to acurately judge putting speed. Traps are in great shape however. Hopefully this is indicative that overall conditions will improve in the near future

early in the season so I don't want to be overly critical, but the course is not in great shape right now. full confidence it will return to form for peak season, but there are a bunch of greens with dirt/sandy patches and some of the fairways are less than desirable. Winter rules, so we took free drops from patchy areas, but that didn't really provide ideal lies either.

That said, still a very fun and challenging course. I can only blame the conditions for a small portion of my bad play --- pretty sure it was my fault and not the courses that I three-putted 10 times! Definitely plan on revisiting in May/June to check on the courses progress.

The course is in "winter condition." The fairways have both green and dormant grass, but grass nonetheless. The greens are a bit long and slow and some of the edges have sand where they've been filling in bad spots. The bunkers are the best--the sand is soft, deep, and nice to play out of (if you must be in the bunkers). They have many tee boxes under canvas--it's clear they are taking this non-peak time to do some much-needed repairs. The staff was great and got us out very close to our scheduled tee time even with a 20 minute frost delay. They also set expectations about getting behind and the warning system the marshalls would use. It ensured players behind us would be able to finish and I personally appreciated that (even though we went off early). More courses should be upfront about pace of play and manage it accordingly. For $35/walk and $50/ride and a 4 hr. round with 60 degree weather in January, it was a good round and certainly worth the price.

Not in it's usual pristine state, Un of MD is still a good tract and challenging with the majority of the holes playing uphill and, thus, long. The rough is also very challenging, as it's a bit long. The weather has certainly taken its toll on the course, because it was in great shape in May in preparation for the Nationwide event. The tee boxes were in the best shape, but the fairways and greens had patches of dirt. Where there was grass, it was thick and mowed. Once we get some rain and reduced heat, I'm sure this course will bounce back. It's a great tract and reasonably priced. They also have a great bar and grill for after (or before) the round.

I'm a UMD alum and have been playing the course for 10 years --- this is without a doubt the best condition it has ever been in. They are hosting a Tour Event in the next couple of weeks, and all the preparation is definitely paying off. Best of all, we tee'd off around 4:20 for only $28.00!!! Amazingly we were able to get all 18 in --- I may not have been able to track my ball on the last 2 holes, but like they say, just hit it straight and the game is easy . . .
Anyway, I highly recommend putting this on your "must play" list this golf season --- I know I'm planning on hitting up the twilight rates as often as possible!

First time back at UMD since late last season. The course is in incredible shape, especially in comparison to last year while they prepared for a Nationwide Tour event. Rainy morning, beautiful afternoon, greens played true throughout. Very excited to revisit soon; really want to see how the rest of the course plays when it's not wet.

Course still doesn't seem like it is mature yet. Greens and fairways are green but the grass is thin. Rough is lush and traps are in excellent shape. Greens were slow in spite of thin grass. This may have been due to excess sand spread during aeration. Snack bar is a grill frequented by University facullty. Although food is excellent, grill gets quite crowded around noon.

Played here all the time in college and was anticipating a great round with all the additions to the course. It's just not ready yet and not in good shape. Will be fantastic when the fairways grow in. Biggest disappointment is that they are still charging full rates even though the course is in such bad shape.

The much anticipated re-opening of the Terapin golf course must be a disappointment to alumni and local residents because of the desperate conditions of the fairways. You should be rewarded for hitting in the fairway not punished...it was better to hit from the rough, at least there was grass. Also, there is no yardage postings nor does each hole have signs or layouts when you approach (this would be ok if you didn't pay $65 bucks but c'mon). Overall, when the fairways mature and proper signs and markers are placed...the course will be very good. However, my foursome will not be going back for sometime to come.

UMD Golf course is back open after being closed for a little over a year. It is obvious that they have put a lot of money into this course. When I went to UMCP, I loved playing this course. The layout was great. With the addition of some new bunkers and restructuring the tee boxes, it is even better. After the fairways do grow in, I believe this course will be a top ten public course in the state of maryland. Additionally, they have improved their practice facility tremendously.

I've played this course many times over the past 7 years, and this past weekend was the best conditions I've ever seen. The greens and fairways were pristine, and there was little to no brown grass anywhere in the rough. I would highly recommend getting out there and playing before the course shuts down on July 13th for renovations. They are planning to redo all of the greens, tee boxes, and move the cart path into the woods, so it is no longer in play. Overall, a great course and a great value.

I used to play this course years ago and I love the layout. But the conditions, even for early March, were pretty bad. A person I played with (who's a member) said they're shutting down the course in July for a year for renovations. In my opinion, they're much needed.
