First time playing Rattlewood this year. Was a bit worried after reading the last review (June 2013) where only 14 holes were open. However, all 18 were open and the course is in great shape. The fairways were like carpet with consistent grass throughout (no crabgrass or mis-match grasses as seen on some other local courses). The greens were also in good shape, although very fast. Several times I bounced the ball short of the green to roll it on and it ended up rolling through the green and off the back. They were just fast, fast, fast. However, very good condition. The only negative I can say is that some of the rough has dried out and turned brown, and in some places was down to dirt. However, most of that is not in play if you can hit fairways. Even though we waited on almost every hole on the front, we played in 4.5 hours on a Saturday morning. The rack rate is $62, which is decent for the shape the course is in. Rattlewood is nothing spectacular, but it's a good course to "let it out" with your driver because of the wide fairways. Just be mindful of the slope because the ball will bounce sideways on many of the holes.

I have played this course many times over the years with generally good results and conditions. However, WARNING…..STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS COURSE AS POSSIBLE (that is unless you want to pay $29 for only 14 holes). On Friday I called for a Saturday tee time, traveled 45 minutes and when I arrived was told the greens fee was now only $29 (including a bucket of balls). I had to ask the desk person three times why the price had changed from $44. He finally confessed that 4 of the holes were closed to replace the fairways with Bermuda grass. Seriously, who approved Bermuda grass so far north and who is paying for this change as Rattlewood is run (along with 8 other county golf courses) by the Montgomery County Revenue Authority. What they should be doing is reversing the two 9’s because the current 18th hole has to be the worst/most boring finishing hole in the world (or at least re-designing it).

The greens were a little bumpy because they just aerated not too long ago. The overall conditions were very good as they always are. This is one of the most undervalued courses in that area. I would rather play here twice and pay less than one round at Whisky Creek. You are not going to find a better value in the area. With that said bring your own cigars if you smoke, they were trying to sell JR brand cigars for $8 a piece, they cost about $1.50-$1.75 each, I laughed at the guy there.

Course is in great condition. No problems with greens, traps, fairways, rough, or tees. Snack bar was closed today and indictions are that is closed on weekdays. There appears to be a limited selection on the weekends. Excellent witer rates ($26.95). Track is long but relatively trouble free except for long water carries on two holes.

$41 w/cart and lunch included! What a deal! The course was in great shape. Fairways in good shape, with only the edges showing wear on a few holes. The tee boxes full, and the bunkers have thick and plentiful sand. Now, to the greens. Wow! Are they fast...in four putt territory. Even if you hit the greens, you won't end up there. Really a tough day putting. The greens are in great shape, but I couldn't rate them as perfect because they are just way too fast. Finished in 4 hrs. 20 mins., but it looked like the afternoon tee times were a bit stacked up.

The course was in decent condition, nothing special. This was the first course I have seen this year that you can tell Fall is knocking on the door. Leaves all over the course made it hard to find balls even on the fairway. It was a bit chilly outside at times even with Baltimore's temps that day abound 85. The prices in the golf shop are a bit high but then again everything in that little town was pretty high. There was a decent deal on soft drinks/Iced tea, you paid $2.50 and got free self serve refills. If you get a good online deal here play it.

Greens were punched with small holes & had a little top dressing on them but they were still quick & rolled nicely. Traps have sand in them but was compacted. Fairways & teeboxes nice. Course in good shape & great value (32 for seniors during week). Chipping around & sticking these greens can be tough.
Today Rattlewood won, but a rematch is on the horizon!

Best greens in tri-county. Fast,Fast. Open fairways but challenging, rolling hills, many different lies. Challenging greens all around. True putters have advantage.
Great conditions well maintained. Great price

Part of the Montgomery County owned and operated courses, Rattlewood seems straight-forward but can be challenging. There are no flat lies on the course and the slant of the fairways is severe, particularly with good, short grass. The fairways are in good shape--only #6 was spotty, with a combination of green and dormant grass giving it a burned-out look. Many of the bunkers had new sand, and the tee boxes had been aerated but were not in bad shape. The greens were hard (difficult to stick them), fast, and with tough pin placements so tricky to sink a putt. The staff was young, energetic, and "aimed to please," so it was very refreshing. NOTE: They will be aerating Monday and Tuesday, and new fleet of carts coming in on Wednesday. $49 w/cart on a Saturday and a 4 hour round.

Using their on-line tee time reservation system, walking was $39 and with cart was $51 on a Saturday morning. Great rate without any coupons. The course is an excellent shape...fairways totally green, tee boxes in good shape, and the greens in great shape and rolling true. The only issue were some of the bunkers had water in them, but what course doesn't with all the rain! The course was surprisingly dry for several days of rain--it clearly drains very well. Good layout, friendly staff, and reasonably priced.

Played at 1:39 pm on a Sunday, it was packed. However, the course itself was very well maintained. From the looks of it, they had aerated the greens about 2 weeks ago, so there were still some marks on it, but barely any bumps. Greens we rolling fast and the fairways were in good shape (a little long, but still able to spin it). Staff was friendly an accommodating. They had a Marshall out who would even help with location of tee shots to help pace of play move along. Overall an enjoyable experience, I will be back.

Played here once a couple of years ago, and the conditions now are a lot better than I remember. Not a bad layout with some interesting holes. Greens on the fast side.

The course was very dry due to the recent heat stroke. Greens and tee boxes were in pretty good shape. The fairways were a little burnt and hard. A 5 hour round in this heat is a little tough but the $30 rate made up for it.

Long round, hard greens and dirt sand traps. However, very open & forgiving course. For $30 on a weekend, I'm not going to complain.

Great shape for a public course. The greens at Rattlewood were the best I have ever seen them. They were quick and in great condition. Can't wait to play again before the weather changes.

I played at 4pm on Saturday for $25. The fairways were in great shape. The greens were running very true, but some were a little wooly. For a hot, dry day I thought the greens were sticking very well. The best part about the round was it was a crowded day on the course and we finished in 4h15min. How can you beat that?

I played this course in the late afternoon. The greens were super fast and rolling very true. They were hard and you could not stick the ball. But a fun course considering that it took 5+ hrs and the greens were killing me. $25 after 4, pretty good.

Greens are generally good but Number 4 has some damage, probably caused by vandalism. Traps have loose sand but it is a little coarse or heavy. Fairways and tees are good but show the effects of heavy use. Snack bar has good hot dogs but limited in other selections.

Rattlewood is in great fall shape...after great summer weather, this course definitely benefited from the adequate rain fall. Rattlewood is a very fairly priced course with a good mix of challenging and straigh forward holes.

I've played two of the MGC, this was my third one, I must say i have good timing, each time I've played these courses I've found them in perfect condition. The woods was in excellent condition. It was a 8:30 tee time, but our group arrived early, and the starter got us out before our tee time. The pro shop was under repair, but the snack bar was serving breakfast, the starter was great. I am looking forward to playing the other MGC'es.

The condition of the course wasn't great. A sign on the door of the Pro Shop apologized for the dry conditions of the the fairways, due to water rationing. But no discount on green fees. The greens had been taken care of, but as the sign stated the fairways were quite dry, hard, brown and fast.

By no means is this course a must play - very dry, fairways need a lot of help, sand traps were more like dirt - but the value here is in the price, the pace of play, and the forgivingness of the course. I played a round in just under 4 hours, and there were staff around to make sure others were keeping pace. Errant tee shots are easy to find; I played all 18 with only 1 ball! Even though it..s not the most challenging design, the pin placements made you analyze each approach, and all 18 greens were well conditioned. Would definitely recommend the course to those looking for an quick, inexpensive round and one that will make you feel a little better about your game.
