Running an aeration special of $75 on the weekends, which is a pretty good rate. Even with aeration, the greens were in great shape and fairly fast. Fairways in excellent shape, with most divots at least filled in with sand mixture and nice lush grass. Bunkers were also excellent with nice deep, fluffy sand. The rough was not too brutal...long in some places, but not terrible. This is one of my favorite courses with beautiful vistas (particularly from #5), lots of elevation changes, and a nice balance of risk/reward holes with short holes you can score on. The staff is extremely nice and very welcoming. And they have a great grill for after the round. It was a tad slow today, but with the special they are running people were taking advantage. This is a great course, great design, exceptionally maintained, and a nice challenge.

For the past 5 years, I have played at Whiskey Creek for either Corp events or with friends. On the most recent visit, it was a friends Mom who asked to play a round for her Mothers day gift.

Pros: The staff at Whiskey Creek are amazing from the Cart attendants, Pro Shop, Starter/Marshals, and Dining Staff. They all made our group welcomed.

Problem: We noticed some of the Bunkers on the Front and Back needing some repairs. Our biggest complaint were the greens. They looked spotty caused by either fungus or water damage.

Overall: Did the greens and bunker issues kill our Golf Experience? Nope. Would we return to play Whiskey Creek again? Yes. During this Golf Round was it worth $105.00? Some would say No.

They were running an aeration special of $62 or $50 for seniors last week and this week. Even with the aeration (greens and fairways), the course is in great shape! The course is manicured, mowed, and landscaped beautifully. The sand in the bunkers is deep and fluffy...nice getting out of it (and I had plenty of practice today). I did 3 putt the first four greens until I got the feel of the aerated greens, but then made it up on subsequent holes. All the staff are welcoming and attentive from the pro shop, the starter, bag helpers and cart girl. The pace of play was also good at 4.5 hours and it was scatter with the carts. I would have rated it 5, but with aeration I just couldn't do it. Love this course, but rack rate is $85/weekday and $114/weekend so it's more of a special occasion round for me...now that I'm retired. Great experience overall, so give it a try. This is the only Ernie Els course and it is must play.

Played Wednesday 10/9, cool overcast and course received enough rain in prior days to have around 6 or so holes cart path only. Staff on and off duty were very friendly and helpful including tips on playing some of the holes when going over what holes were cart path only. Even with the restrictions the pace of play was very good and the people on the course friendly and accommodating (so much that 2 groups invited our twosome to play through). The course is beautiful, each hole different but a nice flow to it and the tee boxes, fairways and greens were very well maintained. Speaking of the greens they told us they stimp them around 10 and it is believable. For the $55 fee we paid I'd probably play it once a month since it's a bit of a drive but at full price it's a special occasion course on my budget. BTW, the wings are as good as advertised. lol

The course was in great condition! Tee boxes, fairways were green and lush, the greens were smooth and fast, some bunkers need some TLC and some more sand but all in all very good condition. But, the problem at this course is the PACE of PLAY. The recommended pace is 4.5 hours. However, I've played this course on weekends and now a weekday in 2013, and I've not finished in less than 5 hours! The marshal did not seem to help during this round. So, if you want a slooooooow round at a great course, try Whiskey Creek...

The recently damaged 10th hole has been seeded and top-dressed with sand. The hole is playable as a minor inconvenience. Good repair work!
I thought the greens were the worst I've seen in a few years, lots of marks and slower than expected and spongy (these greens are never ever rock hard and fast) Just not what I expected.
Some of the famously flat tee boxes are starting to sink a little on the sides. Not as flat as they once were.
Rough is dense with a few more weeds than usual.
Bunkers looked great with sand that felt like hitting out of wet concrete. Two or three bunkers were hard-pan. They all looked good but, stay out.
I think I have only played here one time that was not cart path only. I know it protects the course but, it makes the GPS useless except for ordering food. Walk if they allow it. Cart path only "sucks" here, you are going to walk it anyway.
Whiskey creek is a very nice course. Most players will enjoy it. However, it has fallen out of my number 1 spot, to maybe top 5 in the area.
Will play again, if not cart path only.

THe #10 hole was vandalized last night. Someone took a dirt bike and tore up the length of the fairway and the green. Other than that the course is in great shape. Weather was misty so sand in traps was damp, but appeared to be good trap sand when dried out. Excellent staff and snack bar. Marshalls and cart girl were out in full force in spaite of the fact it was a damp Monday morning. Starter allowed players to play any hole they wanted to replace #10. #2 is a good replacement.

This is a track that requires skill, straight ball striking and stamina. For walkers, bring along your hiking shoes [with spikes] for you will be going uphill and then downhill and then uphill again. And expect wind. Also expect immaculate fairways and greens. Rough that's thick and tight and bunkers with more sand than Ocean City, Overall the course is elegantly designed combining the feel of a mountain course with tree lined fairways and wooded terrain, and then wide open links style with blind tee shots and natural areas that require maximum carry, The greens are fast and roll true so you can lag putt from 40 to 50 feet and stop the ball next to the hole, just like the pros. Be prepared for water hazards strategically positioned but capable of avoiding as long as you hit the ball crisply. Overall this is a must play....at least three times.

This course has a deservedly high reputation as one of the top 5 or so public courses in Maryland. It's a little out of my price range but my group always tries to play it when the rates go down. Today we had our annual November outing. The layout is superb - the two par-5 finishing holes, 9 and 18, are both terrific. I found the greens to be a little below Whiskey Creek's high standards, but I guess for November the course was still pretty good shape. We might not have gotten the round in due to slow play ahead of us had the starter not let us go off on #13. Props to him for giving us a break there.

The Golf Course today was in incredible condition. Green's werent lightning fast but a good speed and nice and firm but would still hold a shot. Fairways were almost perfect, same with Tee's.Course uses Pro link GPS, Starter and Staff were very helpful. Only problem that I saw was the Bunker Sand was very dry and thick/heavy. all in all one great Golf Course, definately in my top 5.

Over the past 7 years I have had the opportunity to play in an annual tournament at Whiskey Creek, each year this course just gets better and better. Whiskey creek is like a fine wine (or better yet a fine Whiskey), the more mature this course gets, the better condition it is in. Right now they are working on a bunker renovation project, however it has literally no impact on your round. The workers are respectful and courteous even though they are working on a few holes. The views, scenery and conditions are to die for. Five stars all around, can't wait to come back next year.

First of all, Whiskey Creek is my favorite course in MD, so I'm already partial. I wasn't disappointed today. The course is in excellent shape from tee box to green. The fairways are green, lush, and cut. The greens are running true, although a bit slower than I anticipated but certainly puttable once you got the speed. I would have rated the course a #5 (excellent), but I did notice some grass growing in the bunkers on several holes. One word of advice...stay out of the rough. It is thick and long and punishing. The staff are always nice and the grille has great food reasonably priced. They were running a great special for Mother's Day (mothers played free with one paying guest), but as a result the course was packed and, therefore, pace of play was slow. This Ernie Els design is a must play.

Whiskey Creek is usually an excellent course.
The course layout is fantastic for any most types of golfers. Views are second to none.
If you find yourself "in trouble" on this course, it is your own fault.
Today, the course is not at its prime yet.
Greens are still a little bumpy and sandy from aerating. These greens are never rock hard and super fast. But they are recovering nicely.
Fairways are almost perfect. Rough is typical for this time of year. The "native" grasses are cut back and you will be happy. Because when the high grass comes in, buy a few more balls.
Staff is very good. The starter is usually very helpful and pleasant.
They have a ranger that helps keep play moving. But it can get slow when the drinking hacks get on the course.
This rivals Bulle Rock for the best course in Maryland. Not yet in its prime for the season. Rates are very steep. It is worth playing when you want to treat yourself/group to a great round of golf.
They have been known for sneaking groups in to start on 10th hole, (to make more money) which will drastically slow your round. If you see this tell them it is unacceptable.
Hacks should play from the red or whites. If you can play, use the blue tee boxes for the best round.
I highly recommend this course

Played in a scramble tournament, and the course was in amazing shape. This early in the year, I had no expectations of the playing conditions; however, I was extremely surprised. The superintendent did an outstanding job over the winter, and the course is green, playable, and has very few bad spots. Worth the price and the drive. Continues to be a favorite.

I've played Whiskey a couple of times each year for the past 5 years --- it never disappoints. Even is ridiculously hot & humid weather and sever lack of rain, the course is in phenomenal condition. My group of 4 moved pretty slow and we still finished up in 4:35. The VERY CUTE cart girl was everpresent and the food at the turn was great. Just a top quality facility from course to clubhouse.

This was one of my favorite courses to play three years ago. It is still in great shape but it takes 5 plus hours to play. I was very upset the last time and told the pro it would be the last time he would see me. He gave us all rain checks since we quit after 16 holes that took 5 hours and 10 minutes to play. Get some marshalls out there and speed things up, we know you make enough with those green fees and way over priced food. They must think they are Ruth Chris or something.

What a layout! The course is built on hilly terrain, yet the routing avoids any ridiculous inclines or declines. The holes gradually move up and then down the terrain. The views are breathtaking at the higher elevations; Sugarloaf Mountain is visible from a few holes. The turf conditions were excellent, even though the perimeters of the greens had been recently aerified. The course is a test from the tips, but very enjoyable from the second set forward. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Top 3 favorite courses I've ever played on! Every hole is challenging and beautiful, the food is amazing, and the conditions were almost perfect. The fringe was recently aerated, which sometimes affected some putts. But no other complaints. Greens had been aerated yesterday so putting was iffy. Sand in all traps was excellent however. Several fairways had small bare spots that may have been repairs from excessive rain over the last week. Tees and rough were in grat shape. Rate was a little high for winter rates, but in good condition the track might be worth it. Snack bar was excellent.

I may be a little partial to WC because this is the exact kind of layout that I like. Very similar to Worthington, PB Dye, which are down the road. The layout uses the natural layout changes to perfection. The elevation changes and the contours of the fairways create some very challenging shots. The course is in great shape and pace moved along. The practice facility was OK. The club house and bar are very upscale for a public course. I highly recommend getting out to WC.

They are back!! I played WC last weekend. When i checked in to the pro shop i was greeted and informed about some difficulties they had in August.....I thought what course doesn't, but had to see for myself. BTW - they offered a reduced rate and a credit for next year so I was preparing myself for the worst. A couple of the greens on the front were not 5 stars (maybe a 3)but played fine. I've seen and played much worse this summer but was never informed before i headed off to the first tee. The rest of the course is perfect. WC is first class all the way. They handled their challenges the way i expected. Professional and friendly. The service can't be beat and this course still remains my favorite.

I have played Whiskey Creek many times since it opened in the mid-90's but never has it be in such awful shape. To begin with:
Practice range: you are still required to use the mats on the practice range though they do give you unlimited range balls with the green fees.
Practice chipping /sand shot green is a mess, it looks like the course has completely abandoned this green altogether.
Practice putting green: in terrible shape, dead grass patches and pot holes filled with sand. I was hoping that only the practice green was this bad; WRONG.
Tee boxes: almost all tee boxes were covered with unrepaired divot holes; lots of them. It was difficult to find a patch of grass on many of them. While I was there, one tee box (hole #8) was being completely covered with new sod.
Fairways and bunkers: these were in pretty good shape all around the course except for some occassional large brown patches. Bunkers were, for the most part, filled with a good layer of sand.
Environmental areas: again, these areas seem to have been forgotten; largely overgrown with tall and ugly weeds and wild grasses, some so high it was difficult to see the course from the cart.
Greens: easily the most obvious problem at this course. Most of the greens had little to no grass on them; along with dead collars and large sand patches on and around most greens. One of the guys I was playing with commented that it looked like as if the
greens were sprayed with green paint so that the dirt wouldn't show through. After a close inspection of several greens, it looks like the course did in fact paint the greens green. One course marshall said that the greens keeper had put on a new weed killer and
instead it killed all of the grass. Has the head greens keeper been fired over this...he should have been.
Overall, this course has gone from one of the "must-play" day fee course in Frederick County to a course that is below even many of the muni course around the area and they still have the gall to charge $82-$99!!! My recommendation is to completely avoid this course for a few years and spend your money playing 2 rounds at one of the many other great courses in the area.

The greens were apparently painted, presumably because they were so dead. The paint did not hide the huge dirt patches. In addition there were tire tracks from the maintenance equipment on the greens as well. A maintenance worker sat in his mower talking on his cell phone next to the tee as we teed off on 4. I just can't understand why people rave about this overpriced course, many munis in the area offer a much better experience.

You get what you pay for at this course. From the cart service to load your clubs when you first pull into the parking lot, to getting your clubs cleaned as you are walking to the clubhouse from the 18th green, everything at Whiskey Creek is performed at the highest of quality. Well, everything expect my golf game, but I can't blame the course for that. Fairways and Greens are in exceptional condition and the aesthetics are phenomenal. My only gripe would be that some of the tee boxes were not in great shape, but that will be addressed as soon as they set up for the next week. All-in-all, I'm confident in saying that this is one of the best courses in MD, and I can't wait to play it again soon.

The course was in near perfect condition, the greens were consistent and the overall appearance was very lush. The aesthetics at Whiskey make the course, whether its the house in the middle of the fairway on 18 or the greens propped on top of huge rock formations it is just an all around beautiful and well maintained course. The sausage and peppers at the turn hit the spot as well.

Whiskey Creek is one of my favorite courses, but not right now. The greens are in very bad shape right now and they are charging $85 I think it even goes to full price this week. From what I saw give this place till the end of the month or even mid May it should be back to playing shape by then.
