The Timbers at Troy Reviews

$35 w/tee time book, so great deal. Course is in great shape! I honesty thought it would be a tad bit wet (still) from the weekend rain, but it was dry and the fairways were remarkable. They were thick and lush and felt like you were walking on carpet. There are a fair number of unrepaired divots (shame on the golfers who don't use the mix on the cart to repair YOUR damage), but the fairways were iwonderful. The greens were average pace, and a couple still had punch holes showing, but didn't affect the putts. Some of the bunkers were still GIR, but my strategy is "just stay out of the bunkers." We finished in 4 hours and, even with the windy and cool conditions, the condition of the course made it a nice day. By the way, Dan was in the Pro Shop and he is very nice and personable...and extremely patient! I've worked with him on other issues and kudos to him for having such a great attitude!

This course was in great winter shape, seriously not that I thought this course was in great shape over the summer but I think now it is in even better shape. Anyway the weather was pretty good I shed my jacket after the first hole and did not put it back on till 17. The fairways were really nice, now some of the bunkers still had rocks and some had ice but overall the course was in good shape. If you find a decent internet rate under $35 play it.

$45 w/cart anytime during M-Th in Tee Tiime Book. Good deal! Course in good shape. Bunker project coming along, and many more bunkers repaired with new sand since last month. Fairways green and lush, but were a little wet (understandable given yesterday's rain). We were still able to do 90 degrees with the cart. Never saw anyone else until #17...had the course to ourselves it seemed. Course is recovering nicely, but there are still a few unrepaired divots. Golfers...let's fix our divots!

Course is in better shape than last month. Still has a fair number of unrepaired divots in the fairways, but their bunker project has improved the course and they aerated a couple of weeks ago which has improved the greens. The greens were very playable and rolled true. Good thing we had an early tee time, because once it didn't rain the parking lot filled up. This afternoon will be slow--but we were able to finish in 4.5 hours. My only suggestion is to filter the sand in the bunkers...still have some pebbles and small rocks.

Course is overall good shape. Couple of the bunkers were shy on sand, but better than when I played earlier in the season. Tee boxes were in decent shape, but some had crabgrass growing through, and it looked like they may have had the markers set in the same place for a while as the par 3's were a little on the beaten up side. Two biggest complaints I have are that the players (yes, US guys) need to learn to replace and fill divots and fix ball marks. There were allot of divots lying only feet from where they had been "dug", and it doesn't take allot of effort to go over and pick it up and put it back, or sand it. Greens were in pretty good shape, and allot faster than last time I had played. Again, like the fairways there were numerous ball marks that went unfixed. Pin placements were a bit on the hard side being only a couple of paces from the edge and close to false fronts, short-siding you, ect, but made for a fun day. Paid $50 for round, cart, bucket, and lunch (hot dog, chips, and soda), so price was good. Pace of play was faster than what I remembered as we got the round in at about 4.25 hours, and had gotten slowed up the last couple of holes.

Not sure what the dude who played on the 25th was smoking during his round, but Timbers at Troy was in absolutely awful shape. I've probably played 100 or so courses in my lifetime, and this one is bottom 5 in terms of course condition. The tee boxes were beat up, the fairways were awful (anyone ever replace a divot here?...probably the worst fairways I've ever played), the greens were average, and the sand traps had grass growing in them. To make things worse, I started a round at 5pm and finished on 9 around 7:45...that's a brutal pace of play. I would avoid this course and this is coming from someone who received a discounted rate ($31). The 3 other people I played with felt the same way about the course...awful.

Played in a tournament and hadn't been at the course since the Spring. Course condition is a bit inconsistent. Some holes in great shape, some not so good. Some tee boxes had crabgrass growing or dirt patches, where others were in good shape. The fairways had similar issues--some fairways had brown patches or brown dirt patches, where others were thick and like carpet. The worse thing were the bunkers. I would say 40-50% of the bunkers were ground under repair. They are working on them, but they are a mess. The staff is very nice, but the course is a bit overpriced right now for the conditions. Hopefully, they will return this course to it's usual great condition.

Another typically slow round at Timbers - I guess 4:45 isn't awful for this place, but it still bothers me. What's worse, it was my own group's fault. Went with a buddy, we were paired up with another twosome who just spent too much time yakking and didn't pay enough attention to all the little things that wind up adding 30-45 minutes to a round of golf.

For example: Look over your shot and make your club selection while your partner is hitting his (don't sit in the cart and watch him!) Read your putt and be ready when it's your turn. Use continuous putting if at all possible (this isn't the US Open) - it's not worth that $5 Nassau to take 2-3 extra minutes on every green (there's 30-45 minutes right there.) Park your cart behind the green. Write down your score at the next tee. Hell you can carry your putter and put it in your bag at the next tee as well, whatever it takes to get your group out of range so the next group can play up to the green. Limit your practice swings once it's your turn to hit (take as many as you want while someone else is hitting - discreetly of course).

Okay I had to get that off my chest. Timbers is a place but it seems like a lot of people don't know this aspect of the game. Nice course but a ton of unfilled divots - soft bentgrass fairways combined with hackers who don't understand they have a responsibility to others to have some care for the course and their pace of play.

Played a tournament at Timbers today. The course was in good shape, except for the many divots in the fairways and a majority of the bunkers. The bunkers were washed out and many under repair, but we were told that going in so were able to take a free drop if in one of those GUR bunkers. Other bunkers were fine. The fairway divot problem, unfortunately, is caused directly by golfers not fixing their divots. It's really unfortunate, because the ones who complain about conditions are probably the ones not repairing their divots! Take the canisters off the carts and pour some mix in the divots you make--not difficult to do. I didn't find the course overly wet, as others have mention. Round was long, but some of that was due to the tournament. Marshall was out patrolling.

I also played Timbers on Saturday 6/23. We got out ahead of the outing, hoping that would make for a faster round. No such luck, we were waiting on the group in front of us on every shot, and the round took 5 hours. They did have a marshall out, and he claimed he told the group in front of us to catch up, but it didn't have much effect. I guess that's just what you have to live with at this place.

Howard County has very few public golf courses, so this one gets a lot of play. The course also tends to be damp and soft. Put soft fairways together with heavy use by mediocre golfers and you get the kind of conditions 4Aces was talking about - unreplaced divots everywhere.

Still, it's a fun layout and the conditions are mostly decent, particularly the greens. I will echo the complaint about the bunkers. A few had obviously gotten new sand, but the majority were hard clay and rocks - some even had their drainage pipes exposed. Clearly there is work in progress to improve the conditions, but they should have marked these bunkers as ground under repair and given golfers relief. I had to hit out of a couple and nicked the leading edge of my lob wedge pretty badly.

They do give you a pretty healthy break on the greens fee if you walk ($17 off), which my group always does. We figure if you're going to be waiting around anyway, why not get some exercise.

The course is a very nice layout and love the bent grass.
Staff was nice and rangers were on the prowl all day. No problem with pace of play. Greens were green throughout but slow. Fairways were OK with a lot of divots.

Tee boxes were fair. With about 5 to 6 feet of space between some markers. (must have been the new guy that placed them)
Sand traps were the worst I have ever seen on a golf course open to the public, ever. Some of the traps look like they have been abandoned for quite some time.

Pet peeve #1 This course has more signs and posted arrows than I have ever seen on a course.
Pet peeve #2 Don't you hate it when the guy on the blower/mower/rake/whatever machine moves from hole to hole in the same order that you play the course. This should be covered in orientation - don't follow the golfers, its annoying.

Houses, condos, and office buildings with parking lots are right on top of this course. Take down some of the signs and put up some nets. Problem solved.

Over rated and over priced. Except in the dog days of summer when private courses have to follow environmental impact rules and regulations, this municipal course will not have to follow and will be well watered for sure. Wait till then.

I think Timbers is the best course in the area but that is not saying much. This course could be so much better and I wish it were since it is in a good location for me. The fairways are kept too wet, it seems like even when we are expecting rain they water the course. Starting right from hole one the fairways are hacked up. I really thought it would be in great shape by now from the areation but the greens are not. I think this course was tter shape a couple weeks ago when I played there. Second the ranger kept driving up on us during shots I mean like 3 or 4 times. I'm glad he is out there but come on let us play golf we were 45 minutes ahead of pace it gets annoying when overdone. Third there were kids on the course from the nearby houses buying snacks & sodas from the cart girl holding us up on a hole, really? Sometimes I wish I just lived on the Eastern Shore and did not have to deal with most of these Baltimore area courses.

I won't waste much time on this review since I see it was just reviewed yesterday and I agree. However what the last review failed to mention is the condition of the bunkers. Some of them were soft and heavy, some were harder than the cart path and MANY of them had large stones in them. I think it was 16 that had a bunker filled with rocks and grass growing in it??? The one short par 4 on the back had so many rocks in the bunker we let our guy free drop, it was that bad. The greens should be in better shape even with the aeration. Anyway great course just stay out of the bunkers. Pace of play was the best I ever seen here and the marshal passed by 4-5 times, good job.

The greeens were aerated a few weeks ago. Still has signs of bumpiness but it was ok. The rest of the course was in great shape. It is a short course with a fun layout. Los of short par 4s with reachable par 5s. The par 3s were tough. It was a great morning of golf!!!!

Slowest greens in two counties. Fairways always wet so you cant take cart on them, others roped off. Lots of walking for seniors. If it wasnt in one of the richest counties in America people wouldnt play at regular prices. No real break for seniors considering conditions.

Course in good shape for early spring. Greens were aerated, however priced accordingly. 1st time playing course, will return.

Timbers was in great winter shape, all of the greens rolled true, the tee boxes were in good shape and the fairways were green. You can tell that this course has not had much rest over the winter, however that should not stop you from coming out to play. Since I spent a lot of time in the bunkers, I can tell you that the majority of the bunkers had fresh sand and were raked by course maintenance through the day. The food service was also a plus: The snack cart girl visited us three times throughout the round, on the ninth we ordered lunch when we teed of and it was ready for us at the turn. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. Timbers has a great mix of challenging holes the strategically placed bunkers make you work to score.

Great day for a round of golf. Timbers is a challenging course; lots of elevation changes and greens were very fast. Course was is very good shape. The food at the turn was phenomenal; everything from sandwiches to cheesesteaks. everyone in the group was very happy.

As usual, Timbers had very slow play. I guess the warm weather was hard to resist and the tee sheet was packed. There were marshalls out, but it was still jammed (and the twosome I was paired with were part of the problem)! In any event, the course is just in average shape. The fairways have some bad water/drainage spots, some resodding, places with ground under repair, and lots of divots golfers haven't repaired. The greens were lumpy and bumpy, but did run a bit fast--with the ball going different directions than planned due to the bumpiness. They were putting new sand in some of the bunkers, which is sorely needed. Some of the traps I was in had rocks in them--some really cheap sand/pebble mix! This is a nice and somewhat challenging track, but it always plays slow and certainly needs some TLC to get in tip-top shape. With the Tee Time Book, the cost was $35 w/cart.

Course was in good shape overall, except for the bunkers ( i was in them a bunch this round), not sure where they get their sand but its terrible, lots of golf ball size rocks everywhere and small pebbles. For the price i would think they could get that fixed. Another thing they need to work on is pace of play, or at least have active ranger out, took us 45 minutes to play 2 holes on front nine, until we played thru a few extermly slow groups.

I am not sure if I am just unlucky or Timbers greens are always punched....can someone explain to me why every time I go to Timber's the greens are aerated? The fairways were in good shape and the tee boxes were fine as well.

This would be my favorite course to play in Maryland if: they would invest a little money in the pro shop/snack bar, tell you prior to paying that they sanded the greens, aerated, or over watered the fairways, offered discounts to military, made it mandatory for employees to attend a customer service class, and improved the practice facility. If your going to charge those prices, have the facility to back up the money spent. I do have a lot of memories playing there, family-friends-etc., just wish it would live up to the hype, the layout and views are amazing.

Course is in great shape in spite of the severe storm that went through yesterday. Some tree damage but the grounds crews were busy cleaning up by my 7AM tee time. The only problem that I saw all day were the flagsticks. They apparently have new sticks and they are so tight in the hole that some of them could not be taken out. Grounds keeper said thay are working to correct that. Excellent snack bar but a little pricey.

Great day for golf --- 5-hour round, but finished in plenty of time to watch the last hour+ of The Masters. Course is in solid shape for early season play. Greens are almost fully recovered from being aerified. Fairways in excellent condition. Bunkers are still very wet from the rain on Friday. Definitely benefit from the trees being bare and the rough still "thin" and not overgrown. Saw cart girl 3 times and the food at the turn was quite strong.

It took over 2 1/2 hours to play the front nine and could not finish due to darkness. The sand traps were in awful condition. The course is very tight and overpriced. No ranger on the course. Got hit into from 170 out while on the putting green. Won't play again.

Tee'd off after 4:00 and was able to get all 18 in. Course is in good shape --- greens were still wet from the overnight downpour; approach shots held well and the greens played rather slow. Saw the cart girl a ton, but didn't see a single ranger.

Great day for golf and the course was is solid shape. Tee boxes are a little rough on some holes, but lush fairways and soft greens made up for it. Sand traps were in good shape too --- didn't even need to go to Ocean City because I spent half my round at the beach. Pace was good and will definitely play Timbers again.

Played at Timbers today - the course was in pretty good condition. The fairways and rough are grown in and the greens are still recovering from aeration. I think the bumpiness of the greens should be smoothed out by next week. Best part of Timbers is their practice facility which includes a huge putting green, chipping area and a grass range...you can't beat it.

I was overly surprised at the condition of the course - it seems like the snow really helped preserve the course from the winter hackers. Overall the conditions were pretty good, the greens were just aerated Monday, so it should be good to go very very soon.

The conditions at Timbers at Troy have been above average all year. Some of the greens were a little choppy due to aearation, but they weren't all that bad. The fairways were in good shape and most of the tee boxes were well groomed. Paid $42 for greens fees and cart at 3pm on a weekday.

This course is hit or miss. Luckily, this week it was a hit. The course, overall, is in great shape. When playing the way it is, $65 is a bargain. Probably the lowest rate around for a decent course on the weekend. The course can play fairly short, so I recommend playing from the tips if you are a somewhat experienced golfer. This course typically has an issue with pace of play, but we were able to get through in 4.5 hours during Saturday peak hours.

Only a 15 minute drive door-to-door from downtown Baltimore. We tee'd off a little before 1:00 and couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. It had rained the night before and the course was still a little wet in some areas. Greens rolled true but had lots of ball marks all around them. Ran into the cart girl and Ranger at least 3 times which is nice to see. Overall, a challenging layout that lets you use every club in the bag.

Short course just south of Baltimore, right off 95. Lots of blind shots, elevation changes, etc. Not my style, but may be worth looking at for craftier players.

The rain has really hurt the course.

The course is in ok shape. Due to the rain, the greens are slow. The course is a little beat up. Needs a little TLC from the grounds crew.

The new carts are great! I felt like a little kid in a go-cart, they are by far the fastest carts I have ever been on. The fairways and tee boxes are in really good shape, the greens are in ok shape. I think the greens are hurting from all of the rain and will probably get better as the season goes on. Definitely a great track that is a lot of fun.

The course is set up very short with several 300 yd or less par 4s. The back tees are mostly in the white tee position (two tees open behind them). I had a good drive on the par 5 17th, but only had 133 yds left for my second. The greens are ok. The grass is dead on the greens but there was grass. They roll pretty slow and are grainy. It was the first time I've played there, but I imagine it is a nice course during the season.

Greens were bumpy, as you'd expect for Feb. Course was very short as it was set up.

I played Timbers on Sept-11 and it was in the best shape that Ive seen in a long time. The playing surfaces were in great condition and the greens were outstanding. If you haven't played it recently I would recommend you play it now before the end of the season.

An enjoyable round. Course was not in great shape. Greens had lots of damage. Staff was friendly. Good hot dog at the turn.

Course has a great layout. Get to hit every club in your bag. Fairways and greens had a few dead spots and the traps were like ponds. Overall, a fun course to play.

Course was in good shape except for the bunkers (always a problem) and the greens. They haven't recovered from the last aeration and were covered in sand. That and the pin placements were cruel.

I was able to tee off around 5:00 and get in 9 holes in just over 2 hours. Tees and fairways are in great shape, but the bunkers and greens are still recovering from all the recent rain. Very nice clubhouse, and helpful staff. Can't wait to cut out of work early again soon . . .

The course was in really great condition, they reworked hole #3 which is pretty challenging with the blink tee shot. I can't wait to go back when it is dry.

The fairways are best I have seen them in a longtime. The greens are in tip top shape. Got through a quick round in a little over 4 hours. I am pretty sure they haven't aerated yet.

I was not too happy with Troy this year, it was just OK.

Twilight rate is worth it @ $37 w/ cart. The greens are showing some wear and the bunkers still stink, but the rest of the course is in good shape.

Timbers is a beautiful course, with constant great conditions. Fresh sand in the bunkers (I spent a little too much time in the bunkers), manicured greens and nice tee boxes. The course is expensive, but definitely worth it.
