COurse for this time of year is in great shape, played real well. This is a difficult course do not think you are going to break scoring record as the more times you play here the better you will shoot, but one bad shot can kill a good round. One of the toughest courses around

The picture you see here doesn't seem to actually be River Downs?
Don't play here if it is raining, threatening to rain or wet.
This course is difficult to score well but can be a lot of fun to play. Never go here thinking you are going to beat your buddies or your best score. Not gonna happen here.
If you don't have a 200 yard ,all carry, fairway shot with accuracy. You will suffer.
Conditions were ok. Greens rolled well. Fairways and tee boxes were a little chewed up. The traps are not good or unplayable. Staff is a skeleton crew but polite and helpful.
Course is not what it was at its peak. I will play again. Not sure I would recommend it to a novice player.

Haven't played here since the name changed back to River Downs (from Francis Scott Key). First, the pro's: pretty decent shape considering what it was, greens in fairly good shape although a bit slow and a couple had bad spots, and pace of play was under 4 hrs on Saturday morning. The con's: #2 and #15 fairways were chewed up; #5 the rough and around the green splotchy at best; #11 the cart path was treacherous. They currently have a bunker project underway and were upfront about that, thus a $40 cost for a Saturday morning. One guy managing the pro shop, check-in, golf carts, starting, and snack bar...no coffee ready, and lost track of starting groups off #1 tee. But, we weren't expecting much, so not disappointed. Some tough holes with lots of environmental area carry, elevation changes, end-of-fairway lay-up shots, and fairly narrow. Need to be accurate more than long. A decent test, but take your patience, plenty of sleeves of balls, and low expectations.

The course is in okay shape. The greens are very slow and thatchy. They need to be detached and need a good vertical cutting. I like the corse lay out up and down with tons of elevation change. You don't need to hit driver every hole just an accurate tee shot. Most holes i teed off with a long iron hybrid or fairway metal.

We played River Downs on a Saturday morning. We had a 9:30 tee time but they let us out 20 minutes early. Nornal rate is $48.00 on weekends but they gave us a discount because they had cut and reseeded the fairways. The course itself is in pretty good shape. The tee boxes and fairways were good. Rough was a little high but very playable. The greens were rolling fast and true. some greens had a small amount of dead spots on the edges but nothing that made them unplayable. I like the layout of this course but I hate the 10th hole. ( Maybe because I can never hit the fairway). There is a lot of elevation changes and there is no way that I would walk this course. Staff is friendly and pace of play was pretty good for a Saturday. We finished up in 4 hours. We have played here a couple of times and we will be back again.

First, let me applaud the superintendent for trying to get this course back in shape. I haven't played it since the name changed back to River Downs (from Francis Scott Key), and it looks 100% better with lush green fairways and decent greens. However, they still have some work to do--the bunkers are not sand, but rather mostly rocks (and not small ones, either); some of the tee boxes have very little grass; and the cart paths need to be redone. Even though the rate was right ($38) and a very respectable 3.5 hour round, be prepared to lose a lot of balls. You can hit the fairways, but with the slope it will roll 50+ feet to one side or the other and into hazards or trees. I don't mind some roll, but there isn't enough rough to hold the ball from rolling completely to the lowest area which is often off the side and into a hazard or the tree line. I now remember why I haven't played this course for a while (and don't think I will again).

River Downs is in pretty good shape - the fairways for the most part were in good shape, the greens were smooth and rolled true (but slow), and the tee boxes looked solid. For $55 on Saturday morning its a good play, make sure you stock up on water and food because they do not have a cart girl driving around.

Caught 9 holes in the late afternoon at River Downs. This course gets a lot of negative attention, but I would just like to emphasize that if you're looking for an extremely challenging layout at a great price ($25 after 2 for 18 holes), and above average conditions, you should definitely give it a try. The only gripe I had was that the greens need to be rolled - were pretty slow.

I went to Pine Ridge at around noon today and the course was already running 45 minutes off their scheduled tee times. Instead of playing a six hour round there on a Monday after noon, I decided to give River Downs another try. Three owners later and this course has finally gotten its act together. The course was in above average condition. Fairways, tee boxes, greens, rough were surprisingly ALL GRASS. It was an incredible bargain. $27 including cart plus the snackbar had a buy one of anything and get the second one free special. I decided to splurge and have two hotdogs. I almost went back for #3 and #4. It's definitely time to give this course another try. The pro told me a ton of work has been put into course improvements. You will not be disappointed.

You can find tee times in the $18 range and they obviously are not putting any money back into the course to improve it. What kind of a business plan is that? Short-term, that's what!! I give these guys six months and they will be bankrupt. The new owners have renamed it "The River Downs Golf Course at The Francis Scott Key Golf Club". Guess they are trying for a Guinness World Record: Golf course with the stupidest name and the worst conditions.

Played this course last fall and it was terrible. Under new management I hoped it would improve and it has, but it still has a long way to go. Overall layout is very challenging.
