Overall Rating: I gave the course 4 stars, because of the Back 9 bunkers and slow play. This is a beautiful golf course and has challenges on every turn. However, with the recent wet weather we have had in the reason, I assume the bunkers on the Back 9, and some fairways, have had some water issues. Most of the bunkers have grass and weeds with little to no sand. On the 13th and 14th Fairways water damage from improper drainage can be seen.

Greens Conditions: They were well maintained and running fast

Fairway Conditions: With the exception of the 13th and 14th fairways - the course is in great shape.

Course Value: Its a long drive from DC out to Front Royal and I'm sure most golfers would agree, pace of play is very important. Regardless, the views and great staff makes this drive a pleasure.

One of my favorite layouts. Unfortunately new mgt has not been able to improve the condition of the golf course. Greens were a mess. Fairways not much better. Should not allow singles and twosomes out (especially walkers) on the weekend. Pace of play was very slow. Almost 5 hours. Hope they can improve things as this course has potential to be one of the best.

Blue Ridge Shadow is under new Management. The Course was purchased by the same group that owns the Holiday Inn directly across from the course.

Course: The Greens were recently Aerated. In my recent visits, the course required major work, but with the new owners, they have put some work into cleaning up the Tall Grass and reducing the swampy areas of the course.

Pro Shop/Food Services/Course Officials: The Pro Shop staff are very knowledgeable and questions about the course and amenities. Food Services are excellent and the staff or very nice. Course Officials - Starters will help you with Pin Placement and also course conditions.

Cons: During our round, we had Major Slow Play. The course put us behind these 4 players that took forever looking for balls, or just shooting the bull. The group behind, quit after 9 holes. When we did see a Marshall, he did say anything to them about slow play. We also understand this was a weekend, but to play a 5 1/2 round is just stupid.

Blue Ridge Shadows is one of my favorite courses. $65 on a Saturday morning--and amazingly not crowded. Played in 4hrs 30min--minimal waiting for the group ahead, started at 8am.
Teeboxes were a little thrashed from the 134 person shotgun start yesterday, but the greens were great.
Staff is friendly, but not in a for forced way.
The course is a fun layout. Lots of interesting holes. Houses exist around the course, but there are not many and they are not close or annoying.
Junior rates here can't be beat--play for $10 cart fee 7 days/week.
My only complaint other than distance is that you can see the highway from much of the back nine. I will definitely be back!

Both of my partners today remarked that the course was not as good as it has been in the past and/or what we have come to expect. Certain parts of the course may have been flooded during the recent rains, but the fairways were not in their usual pristine condition, and the rough was very inconsistent-very long some places and then very sparse in others. Still a must play in Northern Virginia even though the discomfort index was above 100!!! I fear I have become the only one rating courses in Northern Virginia, and it only takes a couple of keystrokes to help make The Local Golfer work for all of us...

played afternoon round during trip to Front Royal, course was in nice condition a few spotty fairways and greens but overall it was excellent. The pro shop staff and starters were real nice, still get the feeling after you play it you could wait another 5 years before you play it again! I guess I like the old conventional type courses not all the tricked up ones!

Our local golf association played a scramble tournament here on Tuesday. Aside from the fact that it had rained the day and night before, the course held up very well. Gas and golf index from Arlington was $48, a bit pricey for the middle of the week.

Got unlimited play for under $50. There are a few bare spots on the fairways, but I never found my ball in one. The greens looked a bit rough in spots, but rolled very true.

Blue Ridge Shadows was in its usual good condition, and it's an interesting track. Gas and golf index from Arlington was $42 senior, mid-week.

Five stars all around for this course. Awesome, challenging layout, the multi-tiered greens were fast and in super condition. This course make you think about each shot before you take it.

Absolutely awesome and fun. Conditions were close to perfect, and the staff was really accommodating. They also had a food drive going on where can goods got you a discount. I think the details are on their website if it's still going on.

The first fairway is like a surrealist painting of a golf hole, it twists and drops about 40 feet to the left, and kind of lets you know that you're in for a ride.
But even with the dramatic terrain, I found the course pretty forgiving as long as you didn't hit it really sideways.

The 15th hole is awesome, it's tee box is next to the practice green, so take a look before you tee off. The 10th is also a cool par 3. Eighteen has a beautiful rock waterfall behind it, but the hole is kind of short and flat, and was a bit of a let down after a day full of ups. But that is my only complaint. I highly recommend this course.

Let's start doing the gas and golf math for Northern Virginia Courses!??!!? We paid a greens fee with cart of $40 and figure about eight bucks apiece for petrol carpooling from Arlington...so that's a total fee of $48, which is bit pricey But, this is a fine new course and worth the drive once a year. Some of the tee boxes were a little ragged, the fairways were good, and the greens were unusually fast. If this course were closer in we'd play it more often, but then if it was closer in it wouldn't be so reasonably priced.

It appears they have been watering because the fairways are in excellent shape in spite of the drought in Virginia. Best greens in Northern VA public courses. This winter should allow the rough to mature even more. We played it in April just after opening and you can see the difference in the rough after just a few months.

Greens were nicely recovered from recent aerification. You could still see the scars, but they putted great. The rest of the course was a little dry, as most are with the drought. Definitely worth the trip. Strong par 3s, 4s are no slouches either. If anyone plays here, let me know how to play the 18th. This hole SCREAMS for a rework. Still worth playing, however.
