What happened to Old Hickory?
Cost: Used the Tee Time Golf Pass
Overall Review Rating: Fairways and Bunkers require major repairs

Course Review: The course needs major maitenance. We noticed brown or dirt spots on most of the fairways. On several holes, huge dirt spots in the middle of the fairway was visible. Bunkers had errosion issues, with some having standing water. No beverage cart service was available.

Let me start off and say - Old Hickory has always been a favorite course to play, but its clear it needs some work.
Greens: It looked like it was aerated recently or within a week.
Fairways: Tons of unrepaired Divots cluttered the fairways. Did anyone look to see if they had sand on their carts?
The staff at Old Hickory continues to rank 5 stars.
Complaint: We partnered with a Senior Couple, who had game. Unfortunately, the starter kept sending out twosomes, or singles out, which caught our group. The unfortunate thing for them, we had a group of Members/Seniors playing in front of us. It did make the female played in our group very uncomfortable when a twosome rolled up on us and said "We can't wait, we need to get home and tried to jump several holes".

This is one of my favorite courses...it just seems to fit my eye, and I like the layout. The area received a lot of rain over the past 3+ days, and overnight as well; however, the course was remarkably dry. Even so, it was cart path only (to be expected), so the round ended up being a tad slow. The fairways have thick grass, but a lot of divots (chunks almost) probably due to the wetness below the surface; however, not many were repaired. The greens were in excellent shape and were pretty much dry--they rolled pretty true, but lots of pitch marks because they were soft (again, not many repaired). Many bunkers had water in them, and others were "crusty," so better to just pick it clean vs. a standard bunker shot. The cart girl came around frequently, and even went back to the clubhouse to pack some hot dogs for the guys with us...very nice! Great staff--bag drop, starter, and cart personnel. We were able to get a prepaid special on GolfNow.com for $55/person, so that was a good deal. Unfortunately, though, from the Baltimore area it took 2 hrs. with rush-hour traffic to get down there (which is 1 hr. 22 mins. generally), but the course was in great condition, and my 3 over 39 on the front nine made me forget about the traffic. (The back nine, not as good, but still shot in the 80's.) Part of Raspberry Golf Trail, give it a try if you haven't--worth it!

Old Hickory is a beautiful course, no question. It's a little pricey, when they don't have a starter, marshal or beverage cart. The Par 4 15th has some construction going on.. However, Its still a spectacular Golf Course, but with the new Potomac Shores GC, in Dumfries, VA, maybe they need to think about reducing the cost?

For some reason, I just really like this course. It fits my eye, and the generous fairways will accommodate even a wayward shot most of the time. Greens are generally large and undulating, so watch the pin placement to ensure you hit it close, otherwise, you will be penalized. I would have rated 5 stars, except the fairways were slightly chewed up (and this goes back to golfers not fixing their divots). Unfortunately, that was hard to do today with cart path only, though. This course weaves in and out of a community on the front nine, and mostly stretched out in the woods on the back. Staff always nice and welcoming. We played in 4 hours and w/Tee Time Book only $55, which in my estimation is a deal. Another one of Raspberry Trail's selections, Old Hickory is in great shape and one of my favorites. If you can tolerate the No. VA traffic, give it a try.

It is what you would expect in January, it was very windy so it made for a hard day. This is a good course even in the winter, I would play here again soon on a day without such windy conditions.

Have been wanting to play this course for a while and just made the trip down this morning. It is almost 2 hours (in rush hour), but only took me a little over an hour coming home this afternoon. They were aerating #1 and #4 fairways, so those holes were a challenge. However, this is a really nice course. Nice layout (although the back is a nicer layout and conditions are better), greens in excellent shape and fast, and the course was well manicured. You might want to stay out of the bunkers--lots of deep bunkers with steep sides and are a challenge for even the best of bunker players. Pace of play was a little slow--4 hrs. 45 mins.--and never saw a marshall. The guys in front of us were yucking it up and in trouble on most every hole, but it was a beautiful day so we just sat back and enjoyed (and told the guys behind us to chill out). The course was not in pristine shape, but above average and a nice blend of challenge and straight forward. $55 w/Tee Time Book on a weekday morning.

As far as I'm concerned this is one of the best RFG courses, and you can always be sure that any of their courses will be in top condition. We play Augustine, their most recent rehabilitation project, and, since I was the last one to review it on The Local Golfer in 2010, I'll be interested to see just how much better it has gotten.

After the round, my foursome agreed that the greens were particularly pristine, albeit a bit quick. And, this has gotta be one of the best RFG courses.

Course was in good shape, and thankfully they let the carts onto all fairways except one on a very hot day. Greens and fairways were good and except for a few ragged tee boxes, the course played very well. Gas and golf index from Arlington was $43.

This is one of the best courses in Northern Virginia, and it was in good shape for early in the season. The greens had been aerated so they were a bit bumpy. As I was coming down the very difficult eighteenth hole, I was wondering if they still had Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout in the clubhouse. I won the hole, and someone other than me paid for the stout!

Old Hickory was a bit dinged up this time around and not up to its usual high standards. The greens had been aerated, and doesn't anyone fix ball marks anymore? Gas and golf index was $45 carpooling from Arlington. The best part was that the clubhouse had Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout on draft!

This is the nicest course I played this year condition wise. The tee boxes, grees and fairways were in near perfect condition. They've put a lot of money into the course. The biggest drawback is the rate of play. It was extremely slow. On one hole we waited over 20 minutes to tee off which is just inexcusable. This was mainly due to the fact that they were only spacing groups nine minutes apart in order to get as many people out there. Well they succeded in getting a lot of people out there.
