I don't know who the last 6 reviews of this place are by and I see the same person reviewed it a couple times but all I can say is if they think this is a nice course they must be used to playing golf on their front lawn. Last year I played North-East was in bad shape and I planned to never return since almost every time I played here since they opened the course is always in fair to bad shape. Looking to get some golf in today decided to play on South-West, it was a waste of money. The fairways were in ok shape but many deep divots not repaired I mean hundreds of them. On every hole the rough was dirt with these crown looking patches of high grass, I mean EVERY hole. The greens are patchy with dirt spots all over the place and don't blame the time of the year because other course don't look like this, even the bad ones. This place has 36 holes but should shut down 18 of them and focus on making 18 holes decent to good instead of having 36 crappy holes. I would not spend more than $30 on this dump on a good day and since I don't trust the reviewers on this site for this course I will not be returning. I suspect the one local who reviews this place is connected with people working at this course. Annapolis has so many people with money in the are you would think they would come up with one decent course to prevent people from crossing the Bay Bridge to play golf.

They charge too much for this place. There was to identifiable rough, it looked like an unkept backyard. Fairways had too many unrepaired divots. Greens weren't too bad but had many ball marks. Tee boxes were about the only section that was nice. Pace of play was adequate. No beverage cart.

It was a little cold but I had the afternoon off. The course was in great condition. Sign of aeration but the greens were rolling true. It was a great bargain - played the North East. I love the North - wide open fairways with great challenging layout. The East is great with rolling fairways.

I got a great tee time deal for $20 at 5pm and managed to get in all 18 holes on the Northwest course. The greens had been arrated in the past month or so but they were rolling good. It was my first time playing the NE course, I have played the SW about 6 times and was never really impressed with it but i loved the NE.

Played South-East courses. Greens are beginning to fill in after aeration. Fairways ok, lots of unfilled divots. New sand added to traps but kinda thin in some places. After the first 2 inches of sand they are rock hard underneath. Some tees in good shape, others have crabgrass & spotty turf

Another good round of golf at Compass Pointe, played the South and West, not real crazy about a couple of holes on the West, but South is a good test.Bentgrass is dormant but nice to hit off of, new bunker sand placed all over the golf course, very much needed, bunkers are very nice to hit out of now.Get the Advantage Card for 25$ you get 1 hr early twilight,5-10$ savings on greens fees every time you play and get 10% off Proshop.

Don't listen to the naysayers, Compass Pointe is a nice layout...Bent Grass Tee to Green for 20$ to 50$. Sure the place get's a little beat up here and there, but we're talking about a public golf course with a lot of play. The only gripe I can find after playing here a lot is the condition of the bunkers and the goose $hit all over a few of the holes near many of the Ponds. Very challenging track from the back tees.36 holes makes this a great place to play

My ratings are based on the near-drought / high heat conditions in Baltimore / DC this summer. I was pleased the South-West course was in reasonably good shape. While this course is fairly pricey for my budget, I used a coupon - thus the "Fair" rating for value. Staff very pleasant, beverage cart came by frequently, good practice area. Played in 4-1/4 hrs.

Ok so it is almost 100 out and we get to the course and they tell us it is cart path only, keep in mind no rain for days. Right then I thought it was kind of strange. The course was bone dry and playing very very slow and it was not busy. after 6 holes we paired up with two other guys that the 4 in front of them would not let them pass and they were playing each hole at about 20 minutes each maybe some 25. Finally I got tired of waiting around in the heat and I left. While we were passin people on our way back we see these 3 jagaloons two of them wearing cargo shorts with tank tops aand the other one with cut off jeans and a tee shirt. I was like not even Clifton would let you dress like that. I said something when I went to drop the cart off and the guy was like well it is hot out there and I'm sure they did not start out like that. I said so it is ok to take your clothes off here once you have passed a couple holes? This is a hard course to start with and if you have to deal with all the other BS it is not worth it at all. I need to just stick with playing Deleware & OC courses.

I have mixed feelings on this one, I like the fact that they have 36 holes and it's close to me,also fairly cheap, but the maintenance of the course is lacking. Most of the time tee's,green's and fairways are playable but the bunkers are terrible(we will typically play rake a spot and place your ball they are so bad) also some holes make no sense, blind shots and having to place a shot to hit through a shoot to the green,I've played much worse but until they get their act together I recommend playing elsewhere

Well the reviews on this site sure don't lie. The course was in pretty bad shape, most of the fairways had very little grass which made it impossible to hit a clean shot. The bunkers were either filled with water or dumped with dirt. I think this course needs a break from the constant play it receives.

Played the south-east combo since there was an outing on the north-west. SE is in rough shape. There are fairways with very little grass that are full of ruts and clumps of dead turf. I've never seen the course anywhere near this bad. The greens are ok, but are soft and slow for how I remember them being before, but they are still recovering from aerification 2 weeks ago. The good thing is that you get a free hot dog, chips and drink on Wednesdays with a round apparently, and the starter told us if we weren't satisfied with the course, tell the attendent at the clubhouse and we could get a free round, so $40 ended up much more reasonable for the round with our Advantage card.

We arrived and were told we were getting $10 off for aeration which I understand is a routine part of maintaining a golf course. What they failed to mention when we booked the tee time ( which would have saved me more than $10 ) and when we arrived Sunday was that the fairways were burnt like a plate of brownies. Bunkers were hard , packed dirt and rocks with standing water ...keep in mind we have had virtually no rain. It was atrocious , scandalous and flat out common to not inform us of the overall condition of the course. Other courses in the area are in great shape for this late in the season so to blame it on weather is a crock. Compass Pointe has failed to maintain this course and now it's customer base. It was a waste of my hard earned money and time and do not like being taken advantage of when honesty would have allowed me the opportunity to pay for a course that cares about golf and it's customers. It will be a cold day ..................

Played North and West. All fairways on both nines had large areas of dead grass. Tees were also beat up badly. Greens on North course had recently been aerated and were not sanded sufficiently. Greens on West course were better but it appeared that repaired ball marks were not recovering. Most traps were like waste areas with numerous rocks and erosion marks. On the positive side, snack bar was good, all staff were friendly and helpful, and the price was good ($33 for seniors, including lunch, with an internet coupon.

Played this course the other day and was very disappointed. It hadn't rained for several days and the course was damp like a sponge. The sand traps were full of mud, standing water or were hard as rock, not one had actual sand in it. The grass needed cutting almost course-wide and there were tons of divots in the fairways, greens and tee boxes.
Also the layout of the course is extremely challenging even in good conditions, with many holes requiring blind shots and some are total overkill. I believe 5 on the South Course you can't even see any fairway from the tee box. The layout of the course does not provide for a fun experience. |

With the great weather we have had for the past couple weeks i really thought the sand traps should have been in better condition. Most of them seemed like they have not been raked at all this year. The greens were ok and the fairways looked good. The staff was nice but the clubhouse prices seem to be a little steep even for golf course prices. Really, $9 for a bloody mary is the most i have ever paid anywhere. I will play it again because i do really like the course, but i was disappointing this time around expecting to much.

The greens had recently been aerated, and overall were pretty bad; inconsistent speed, extremely sandy, and untrue. The course was packed, yet we didn't have to wait on a single hole. The tee boxes were nice and the fairways were good considering the beginning of the golf season. Concession cart was in operation which is always a plus. I think that a $45 price tag was a bit high this early in the year for the given course conditions, though they could have gotten more than that for a round because of the perfect weather.

Played the North and East courses today. The course was very wet after two straight rainy days. The best part of the course had to be the greens. The greens were consistent throughout and in really good shape. The fairways were in decent shape, but that was probably because of all the rain. Overall, a very enjoyable round.

Played the South West Course which was in overall good shape. Considering the wetness of the course from yesterday's rain, the greens were pretty much unfazed and rolled true. Probably the most impressive part of Compass Pointe was the staff, they understand how to move people from cash rep, to starter to tee box. We finished a Saturday round in a little over 4 hours (with cart path only)...that was pretty impressive.

Course is in great shape even after a fair amount of rain. Tee boxes look like they're getting a bunch of play, but the fairways and greens were in great shape. Greens drained exceptionally well and rolled true. Saw the ranger at least 3 times throughout the round, but only saw the cart girl once. Play was smooth; round was 4:30 and only had to wait briefly after the turn. Overall a solid course and I look forward to playing again soon.

We played the Northeast course and it was in great condition. The rough was spotty in places, but that is why they call it the rough. The greens were awesome, being firm yet receptive; you had to have some spin on your shots. The course was crowded, but we played in approx. 4 hours and twenty minutes. One good thing was the cart rule; to protect the rough, we were told to stay in the fairway. The staff was friendly and attentive. Compass Pointe is now a place that you must see.

My buddy booked a time on 1-31-09 for 2-1-09; he gave them his credit card to hold the time. He and three other guys then drove one hour to the course. The attendant in the shop then told them that the courses were closed due to snow cover! He asked why they took his CC info the day before; there was no answer. Then, the assistant pro told them that there was nothing he could do about it. Needless to say, they have lost at least five customers.

I played Compass on 9/22 and was very disappointed with the conditions of the entire golf course. Not sure what has happened to the course, maybe it had something to do with the problem of illegals working there and the press getting wind of it. Not sure what is going on now, and if they even have a greens crew but I sure hope the conditions turn around soon. My group does enjoy Compass but we don't plan on going back until we hear some good things about the course conditions improving.

The conditions on the course were above average, the fairways and greens were in great shape, however it looks like they are working hard to get the rough back in good shape. The rough was patchy is some areas and uneven, good thing I spent most of my time in the fairways. Regardless this course is a great play and has some very scenic and beautiful holes. |

Overall, I would say the course is in good shape, it should be it is only mid May. In a couple of weeks when the weather starts getting ugly, who knows. Grass in the rough is non-existent, can't imagine what it is going to be like in July/August. Each and every fairway is framed by mounds of bare rough, which acts a spring board to send your ball in the hazard if you hit them. You are either in the fairway or taking a penalty, period. I know, I know, hit the ball in the fairway and I wouldn't have a problem, but for $55 on a Tuesday afternoon I want some grass under my ball when I am lucky enough to have it stop in the rough or when I am chipping around the green.

I played the North-East course with that Ronicles guy and agree with just about everything he said. The tee-boxes, fairways and greens are in excellent shape - there are a couple of greens that will probably burn up in another month or so (maybe 2). This course is still fairly new and the county rushed the opening and didn't allow the rough to grow in properly, although it is still a problem it is getting better. However, dropping $70 on the weekend (not including range balls, they have a grass range but I have never seen it opened???), you would expect to have grass under your ball.
The tee boxes are nicely trimmed and well kept. The greens look really good, except those two I mentioned earlier, and are very hard and moderately fast.
I would not recommend this course for hackers/beginners. The North is a links style course that plays fast and usually a lot of wind. It is not forgiving at all, and there are many forced carries.
In the area this course is definitely a step above Eisenhower, Timbers of Troy, Enterprise to name a few but you definitely pay a premium. I think in about 2 years this course will be well worth the money.
See you next time! |
