I have to think this course suffers from location. As you exit US-22 and drive through Hopedale, you'll pass an assortment of defunct businesses that make the area look like a ghost town. It's truly in the middle of nowhere. The course is never busy and I've heard they struggle to survive. It's a shame, because the layout is wonderful. Yes, there are a couple of hokey holes, but there are some beautiful gems such as #2, #3, #13, #14 and even #17.
Rain has the greens and fairways suffering a little right now. That is why I had to score the fairways a little below average, but the greens roll nice and hold your approach shots. There are problems with crabgrass, but no worse than other courses in these price range with this amount of traffic and greenskeeping resources. The owner is often in the shop and seems like a cool guy. Highly recommended for golfers in the area.
Get out and play Castle Shannon. Keep this course alive and thriving. I'm only in the area on occasion, but I would play here much more often if I were able to do so.
