Rock Creek Golf Course Being Mismanaged
I had the misfortune of going to Rock Creek Golf Course this weekend. I've been golfing there for the past ten years, but was dismayed by the extremely poor condition of the course, and the bad management of the staff. Here's a quick rundown of my golfing experience.
First off, the starter failed to honor the t-time of our group and we weren't able to start playing until 35 minutes later this was the most minor problem encountered. The worst problem was the condition of the course, there are huge patches in every single fairway where there is no grass growing at all. Several fairways are showing signs of erosion with large gullies forming in the mud. In the areas surrounding the green there are also lots of barren spots between large clumps of grass. Finally the greens themselves were very uneven.
But that wasn't the only problem. After being on the course for two hours and having played only five holes, we called the pro shop to report that the pace of play was extremely slow and asked that they send a marshal around to urge players to pick up the pace - they refused and said the marshal was busy doing something else. The result is that a round that normally lasts two hours fifteen minutes on the front nine, lasted three hours and fifteen minutes.
I can only conclude this is a result of failing to properly marshal the course and greedy management more intent on pushing too many players out onto the course too quickly just to gain a few more dollars - and I'm assuming they didn't honor our t-time because they had allowed players on the course without t-times, again just to gain a few more bucks at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment.
Lastly, it was a hot day Saturday and the management had provided no water on the course. It's a real shame that an enjoyable course near my home has become such a mess. It needs new management that knows how to properly care for the golf course, and that treats the people who come to play with some basic courtesy.
