Here we go. I hesitate to say that what was once a resort course that featured some of the fastest and truest greens in the area has returned to past glory. We are just not there yet. While the fairways and now thick, firm and lush - the ball sits up perfectly for some great ball striking opportunities - the greens are another story. They are too slow, bumpy and uneven. The ball skids across them and doesn't roll true. And did I mention slow. Did I say slow....slow....I guess you get the message. This course itself is in two parts. The front nine rides the mountain. Each hole requires a precise tee shot either on the left or right side of the fairway, Hit the mark and it feeds to the middle for the best approach opportunity, But bring your A-game for holes #6, #7 and #8. Then downhill to #9 and your are on your way, Now the back nine. Downhill dogleg left on #11 and #14 are extremely difficult holes. Hole #12 is a monster up the mountain Par 5 with a 90 degree turn to the left for the last 150 yards to a blind third shot. You can't see the green unless you get it up there. When you hit down the mountain to #15, the same blindness sets in. At the base of the hill you will find a huge pond. But don't fret, hit it to the left side and you will have a 180 yard second shot - which means after a few dozen lost balls - you can now make an "eagle" and it's all worth it. Now #16 another really tough Par 4, and my favorite Hole, #17, a demanding Par 3 of 200 yards which you hit over two ponds to a big green and this one is one of the better greens. And finally, #18 straight up a "shoot" to a gauntlet of bunkers, including some real St. Andrews style traps. But if you hit is straight off the tee and carry a second shot you can make a "birdie" and go home happy, Yes the fairways are lush and the greens....slow...slow...slow. Not the standard from the past and what veterans come to expect. But it's early in the season, and with the proper maintenance, we can have the fast, true rolling greens that will restore this course to the five star rating it deserves.
