The Woods Course at Kingsmill is in great shape. Tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers are in excellent shape. Most of the greens are also in great shape, although I saw a couple of greens which had some rough spots. I was surprised that the greens were a bit slower than some of the other courses in the area. And, management had just overseeded the fairways, so they were a tad long and it was cart path only. My guests, though, thoroughly enjoyed the course. Unfortunately, the new owners of Kingsmill (Xanterra) are changing the Resort a bit and The Woods will be a members-only course starting January 2014. No public play and even no resort guest play--it will be completely members only. Actually, that might be a good thing, as we had a member several groups back from us who clearly didn't like the pace of play and jumped in front of us (and the two groups behind us) only to get stuck because they ran into the foursome in front of us (and the 3 foursomes in front of them). They picked up their shots and moved off the course. Another example of ignorant members--on a weekend at a resort you have to expect a little slower place. (Our round was about 4 hrs. 45 mins.) If you are interested in playing The Woods, get it in before January 2014 or you'll never play it! The staff is great and always helpful, so they make the experience a good one.

Out of the three courses, The Woods is my favorite. No houses, and the course winds around and through the woods, ravines, and environmental areas which adds character and provides some interesting holes and looks. Kingsmill always keeps their courses in great shape--only one fairway had damage, and it looked like golfers ran the cart up a pretty steep hill eroding the grass, which they roped off for repair. Tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers, and greens were all in terrific shape. Generous fairways and large greens. I didn't play all that well, but it wasn't the course's fault! Staff always welcoming and helpful...they got us out 20 minutes before our tee time and we moved around the course in 4 hrs. 15 mins. I love Kingsmill and play (and stay) every time in Williamsburg, which is several times a year. Great resort with wonderful courses and amenities.

The Woods was in excellent condition from tee to green. This is my favorite of the three courses at Kingsmill (even before The River, where the LPGA plays). It's picturesque and wide open, so can often just take your driver and go for it. Pay attention, though, to the slopes because they will have an effect--more so than some courses. The staff was great, especially the starter. We had an 8:00am tee time and got behind some really slow guests (there were 2 open holes by #3). The starter rode out and gave them a warning and then assisted us in playing through on #5. We ended up playing in 4 hours, which was great. The 3 of us appreciated the assist. The rack rate is a little steep, but we had a discount which we used. This is good resort golf (once we got through the foursome), because you played at your own speed and never saw anyone else. Kingsmill does a great job all around.

Since I stay at Kingsmill, we typically play one of the on-site courses. The Woods is my favorite. It was in good shape--recently mowed (including the rough) and it was in good shape tee to green. Some fairways and greens did have small, minor dirt spots, but nothing that interefered too much. We had early-morning tee time (8:06) and completed our round in less than 4.5 hours. The course wasn't crowded for a holiday weekend.

The Kingsmill courses area typically in great shape, and The Woods was no exception. With the heat, it has taken it's toll on the course but it's still in better shape then some. They had just mowed the front nine and clearly they had let it get long -- there was mowed grass lines in all the fairways (you could lose your ball in the fairway under the clumps of mowed grass). However, the fairways were green, as were the tee boxes and the greens (with the exception of a few of the outer edges of the green with small patches of dirt). It was pretty hot when we played and we had a marshall come around several times with ice water to check on us, as well as the beverage cart made several rounds throughout our time on the course. The Kingsmill courses are a little pricey, but can be a real treat.

The Woods course was hit by the 4/16/11 tornado and it took out 2000 trees; however, according to the staff, no fairways, tee boxes, or greens were hit. They are replacing a lot of the cart paths on the front 9 due to damage, but nothing to detract from the round. The course was in good shape, although had some brown spots here and there. We were the first out on a Sunday morning and finished in 3.5 hours. The staff is always pleasant and accommodating, and the course was in good shape considering it took them almost a week to clear the downed trees.
