Again...pristine! They are getting the course ready for the LPGA tournament in May and the fairways were exceptional, the greens firm and fast, and the rough brutal! Under new management (as of March 2015), the new management is very familiar with golf resorts and tournaments. It already shows in the attention and care of the courses. Stay at Kingsmill and experience their two resort courses.

Pristine! That's all I can say about the condition of The River. Fairways, greens, and bunkers...all in absolutely gorgeous condition. Never saw a soul on the course after the first hole. Took a friend who had never played the course and she was wowed!! Top notch course, in top notch shape, and warm and friendly staff. Treat yourself--stay at Kingsmill and play The River.

You can only play this course if you stay at the resort, and they have a variety of different packages which affect the price of the golf and the course you play. The River is their premier course and where the LPGA plays in the Spring. This Dye design has always been one of my favorites. For the most part, it meanders through the various Kingsmill communities but is buffered with landscaping, trees, and mounding all in the appropriate places. #3 and #4 are challenging holes...#3 is a par 5 which slopes right to left and you are hitting up to an elevated postage stamp green. #4 is a par 4 where the tee boxes align you to the left side of the fairway which is bad news! The rough is always 4 inches over there and will add at least 2 strokes to your score. Stay right towards the cart path. #15 is a par 5 and a large environmental carry off the tees except the very forward tees. This hole is somewhat blind for the 2nd shot, but just stay to the left to avoid the ravine on the right near the green. Then you start the beautiful James River views on #16-#18. Gorgeous! It's a great pace of play and you are pretty much left to yourself to feel like the course is all yours. The staff is welcoming and will pay attention to your every need. After your round, stop by the bar area of Eagles restaurant (adjacent to the Pro Shop) and have a bite to eat. They have great pub food in the bar area and lots on tap. Kingsmill Resort has lots to offer for a golfing weekend...2 courses, a spa, 3 restaurants, and a free shuttle service to Busch Gardens, Water Country, or Colonial Williamsburg. And, they have 1, 2 and 3-bedroom condos, or you can reserve just a room (vs. condo). Lots to do for golfers and non-golfers. Worth a trip to the Resort...you won't regret it.

Last day in Williamsburg and had the first tee time out on a Sunday morning. We set the pace and finished in under 4 hours. The course is in great shape--lots of attention to detail, i.e., landscaping, edging, mowing, and watering to keep everything green. Tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers in excellent shape. The greens were also in great shape and had nice speed, but I did notice a fair number of unrepaired pitch marks. This course has four of the most beautiful finishing holes--starting with a narrow par 5 (#15), a par 4 with the green down by the James River (#16), and numbers 17 and 18 right on the James (par 3 and par 4). This course is where the LPGA plays, and the conditions were still close to those standards, particularly the rough which is thick and punishing--you can easily not find your ball as it just sinks to the roots. It's a great course, so if you have a chance, take the time and play it. Kingsmill Resort has three courses and all are interesting and in excellent condition. The bar is great for food and drinks, and the staff is always welcoming.

With the LPGA having just played 3 weeks ago on The River, the course is still in great shape. We had showers on the front nine, but cleared up on the back. Course drains well and the rain didn't change the roll on the greens. Greens were very readable and puttable--even with the undulations, they were rolling true. Fairways in great shape, although starting to go dormant. Tee boxes, bunkers, and rough all in great shape. The three finishing holes are beautiful with views of the James River. Staff always friendly and helpful from the time you unload the bags until you reload the car after your round. Stayed on property and always enjoy the resort. Golf can be a little pricey if you have to pay rack rate, but staying at the resort provides a break on the price for golf.
