The Plantation course at Kingsmill weaves in and out of the Kingsmill community. You will see golf course villas, townhomes, large homes, and $1M+ mansions throughout the round. And, #18 does end up facing the James River (in between holes #16 and #18 of The River course where the LPGA plays). The Plantation has some interesting holes with water and ravines, but is pretty straight forward. As with all their courses, it's in good shape, although most of the grass is dormant. The greens, though, were extremely slow--looked like they had been punched recently. It was rather cool out, but with cart covers it ended up being a nice round.

Kingsmill has three courses and the Plantation is probably the least played for resort guests, but certainly Kingsmill residents and club members play it a lot more. It is $85 for resort guests and $95 regular rack rate, but a fair price for the conditions of the course. Tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers all in great shape. The rough was long and a bit punishing--it didn't look like they had cut it due to recent rain so it caused more strokes because the ball would just be swallowed up and sink to the roots. The greens were excellent--not too fast, and rolling true. The staff is always exceptional--helpful, courteous, and always checking on you. The marshall checked on us several times, and also asked the group in front of us to pick up pace a couple of times (as they were 20 minutes behind pace). We still finished in 4 hours on a Tuesday morning. Course has a nice layout, weaving in and out of the Kingsmill community with views of several $1-4M homes, the James River, and some historical sites. It's not the most challenging of the three, but still worth the time if you're staying at the Resort.

The Plantation is the easiest layout of the three courses at Kingsmill. It was in good shape, with the fairways completely green (looked like a desert course with the brown rough and the fairways green). The tee boxes and greens were also in excellent shape, with the greens rolling true and average speed. The bunkers had good sand and had been raked throughout the course. The rough is Bermuda (I asked the Head of Golf) and dormant, but thick. It is punishing! It's so thick that your ball will sink down to the roots--you can easily lose a ball. Best to stay in the fairway!! The course is not long (4880 to 6430), but they added a red/white combination to move the ladies up to 5220, which is a nice option. Kingsmill did this for both the Plantation and the River. This time of year, the rates are reasonable but even in season the Kingsmill golf course trio are a nice option and golf packages with a 1, 2 or 3 bedroom condo are available (and you can throw in spa amenities for the spouse who doesn't play golf). I'm going back for Thanksgiving weekend as well. A must play while in Williamsburg.
