Even though this course is a bit short (6712 tips and 6123 whites), it is a tough layout. Lots of elevation changes, left to rights and vice versa, strange bounces, narrow fairways/landing areas, and vegetation. After all, this is a mountain course with several holes at 3200 ft and above. The fairways are pristine and the edges and vegetation manicured beautifully. They recently aerated the tee boxes, and they are filling in nicely. The bunkers had great sand. The greens had to be a 12--they are undulating and fast, fast, fast. They are in the 3 and 4 putt arena, as well as several holes with false fronts...you hit the green and it rolls backwards into the fairway. Even with a weekend rack rate of $89, it is a wonderful experience to play this course. There are some beautiful holes, especially #15 with the condos on the ridge. The staff is also very nice here. Unfortunately, though, this course will be closing permanently to public play December 1, 2013. Only Wintergreen Resort guests and members will have access after that time. It's a great course, and there are another 27 in the valley associated with Wintergreen Resort which the public will have access to.

Congratulations to Wintergreen! Devils Knob (at the top of the mountain) is in excellent shape from tee to green. You are hard pressed to find any spots or damage in the fairways or on the greens...or even in the rough! Speaking of the rough, do yourself a favor and stay out of it! It is thick and punishing, and will add 1-2 strokes to the hole. My only complaint was slow play. We waited every hole and never saw a marshall. But, it was a beautiful day, and at least 10 degrees cooler on this mountain course than in the valley, so I'm not complaining too much. Devils Grille is a great place to get lunch after the round--either in the cool dining room or on the outside patio overlooking the 18th hole. Wintergreen was running a web special of $49 during the weekday. Check their website before coming down, but try Devils Knob. It may be short (6123/white and 6712/tips), but it is not a pushover. Better have your A game.

Had an 8:00 am tee time on a Thursday morning and the temperature was 70 degrees. When we finished the round 3.5 hours later, it was only 78 degrees with a nice breeze. Can't beat that for an August day. The course was in outstanding shape. They haven't experienced the hot Summer weather on the mountain that the valley and surrounding states has. The tee boxes were in great shape, the fairway was exceptional (completely green), and the greens were beautiful--and fast! This course is only a par 70, but it is a shot-makers course. Long hitters will have a hard time using the driver, because the fairways provide bounce and roll and you just get into trouble. This course is in pristine shape. With the weekday web special, the $69 is a good deal. And, as always, the staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating. I don't always play this course well, but I truly enjoy the beauty, the weather, and the people. You always feel like a guest and not just a golfer.
