Puma to Buy Cobra Golf

Acushnet Compnay, the parent company of Titleist, FootJoy, and Cobra has announced that it has reached an agreement sell of its Cobra brand to Puma. The deal includes the Cobra Brand, related inventory, intellectual property and endorsement contracts. Acushnet will keep control of the Titleist and FootJoy and will continue to provide services for Cobra for a period of time to make the transaction seamless.

"With the sale of Cobra, we have the opportunity to devote all of our resources to the global growth of our industry-leading Titleist and FootJoy brands," said Wally Uihlein, Chairman and CEO of Acushnet Company.

Grass is Yellow, but MD courses are open

This week marks the first week that most area golf courses are open. The snow over the past two months pretty much eliminated any hope of a winter golf season. However, it appears that most golf courses have recovered quickly. Through my travels today I saw the following golf courses open Renditions, Hog Neck, River Marsh, Lake Presidential (9 holes), Beaver Creek (7 holes). I think we can safely say golf season has officially begun!

The PGA Tour to Make a Stop In Asia

The CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia, will be the first PGA Tour sanctioned event in Asia. The tournament will be played in late October at the MINES Resort & Golf Club.

The Tournament will feature the top 25 available players in the FedEx Cup standings and the top 10 available Asian players. The field will be rounded out with five sponsor exemptions.

Tiger Receives Phone Calls From Obama

While no one could find Tiger, presidents from the past and present didn’t have the same problem. Golf Digest reported that Tiger received phone calls offering support from both President Obama and Bill Clinton. I find it shocking, but not surprising that President Clinton was able to offer martial advice to Tiger.

John Daly In His Boxers?

John Daly has signed on with a new internet company to endorse underwear. Slix, a four month old internet company has signed John Daly to endorse its line of Slix Closer Boxer Briefs. Luckily for everyone, he'll still be wearing the crazy pants on top. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sick of Tiger? Lets move on!

It seems like every single news source picked up Tiger's "press conference" last week. Now, every channel I turn to Tiger, Tiger and more Tiger. I love how everyone wants to analyze whether he truly meant what he said or didn't - WHO CARES - Tiger doesn't owe me an apology I just want to see him back in the news for all of the right reasons - winning championships. Tiger gave little indication of when he plans to come back, but it will be one long golf season if he is a no show on the PGA tour this year.

Key Points of Tiger Woods Press Conference

Tiger Woods spoke publicly today for the first time since his November 27th car crash. The statement last 14 minutes and took place in the clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass. Here are some of the key points he made:

"I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in." "My wife Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As Elin pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words; it will come from my behavior over time."

"I have made you question who I am and how I could have done the things I did. I am embarrassed that I have put you in this position. For all that I have done, I am so sorry."

When is Tiger coming back?

Another deadline passes with no sign of Tiger. Friday the deadline for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship passed without Tiger's name on the billet. The WGC Match Play Championship will start Wednesday with Steve Stricker the world's #3 ranked golfer as the #1 seed, as Phil Mickelson will also miss the tournament due to personal reasons.

The next tournament on schedule is the Waste Management Phoenix Open, (really, who would want to play in anything dealing with waste) which Tiger has not played in years. Maybe we will see him the week after at the WGC-CA Championship at Doral where he has had great success winning the tournament 3 times.

At this point I am just hoping we see him again this season!

Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson Will Miss The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

Contrary to the numerous reports over the last couple of weeks, Tiger Woods will not play in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship next week. The deadline to enter the tournament was 5pm this past Friday.

Englishman, Ross McGowan, the 66th ranked golfer, will now get his shot to play in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship with Tiger and Phil both not entering. Tiger is missing the tournament due to personal reasons while Phil is taking a family vacation.
