John Daly Done With Golf

After John Daly missed yet another cut, this time at the Farmers Insurance Open, he apparently told the media that he is "done" with golf:

"I'm done," Daly said, following rounds of 79-71. "I can't compete. I can't play like I use too. I can't keep taking spots from guys out here playing this bad. It's not worth it."

"I'm tired of embarrassing myself in front of (my fans). I can't do it anymore."

There is speculation that this interview was meant to stir up some press for John Daly's new reality show premiering in the next couple of months.

Bulle Rock Now Open Year Round

For the first time in the history of the top public course in the region, Bulle Rock will be open year round. To sweeten the deal Bulle has lowered its daily fees to $79 which includes a $10 coupon in the restaurant. If you haven't played Bulle Rock before this may be your chance to play a truly fantastic course. Or you can wait until next golf season when their rates will drop from $150 to $125.

Save Sligo Creek Golf Course

If you have driven along MD-Route 29 over the past few months enroute to I-495, then you would have noticed signs all over place saying "Save Sligo!" This little 9-hole golf course has received quite a bit of publicity over the past year or so, as the Montgomery County Revenue authority has threatened to shut it down. Sligo Creek is one of nine courses operated by Montgomery County Golf and last year news was released stating that Sligo was losing money which would force it to shut down.

Marylands Newest Golf Course: Lodestone Golf Club

Lodestone Golf Club, located on a mountain ridge above the beautiful Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resort, is scheduled to open in June 2010. The course is being built by Wisp Resort Development and OB Sports Golf Management. The layout is being co-designed by former pro Hale Irwin and Todd Shroeder.

Greystone – Redefining the “Muni” Course

Here at TheLocalGolfer, we strive to expand upon the typical feedback on current golf course conditions and provide details about the entire public golfing experience. So . . . over the river and through the woods . . . to Greystone Golf Course we go (actually, there’s no river to speak of when traveling to White Hall, MD, but the trek through northern Baltimore County’s scenic back roads is well worth the trip.)

Since opening in 1997, Greystone has established itself as one of the premier public golf courses in the state, perennially receiving accolades from Golfweek as one of the nation’s Top 50 Municipal Course (#26) or one of the Top 10 public courses in Maryland (#6). Baltimore County’s finest also received a “Four-Star” rating from Golf Digest and is typically named as a “Best Place to Play”. Locally, Greystone is constantly promoted by word-of-mouth as the top-tier course in the area and golfers always indicate a great sense of pride & enthusiasm when talking about this gem.

Ravens Football and Golf at Westminster National – what more could you ask for?

Unfortunately for Orioles fans, by the time we reach the month of August, it’s already time to turn our focus from baseball to football. For Ravens fans, this means one thing – Training Camp in Westminster, MD. For over a decade now a group of friends and I have ventured out to Carroll County to catch the morning and afternoon practice, but in recent years, we have been mixing in a round of golf in place of one of the practices. This year, our annual trip to Ravens Camp also led us to Westminster National Golf Course.

It’s been a little more than two years since new ownership took over this golf course and renamed it Westminster National (formerly Bear Creek). However, changing the name isn’t the only thing that they’ve done to begin to redefine the course and, most importantly, the golfing experience they help provide.

Baltimore County Golf will “Play it Forward”

Throughout the month of August. Baltimore County Golf is teaming up with the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure® (Komen Maryland). All five Baltimore County Golf (Greystone, The Woodlands, Diamond Ridge, Rocky Point and Longview) courses are participating in this promotion, in which a portion of each greens fee will be donated to the foundation.

Matt Bassler Wins the Maryland Open

Amateur Matt Bassler, a native of Catonsville, MD, won the 88th Maryland Open at Hillendale Country Club today. Bassler, a 23 year old graduate from Loyola College edged out Brett Martin, Jim Estes and Dirk Schultz to win by two strokes. The final two holes were close as Brent Martin pulled within a stroke at 17, but Bassler finished off 18 with a birdie to end the round with a 71. Bressler shot a 70, 69, and 71 over the three rounds to win the tournament at 3 under.
