Whether drinking a beer at the 19th hole or opening dialogue at a business dinner, the question, “What is the best golf course you’ve played?” always leads to an active and inspiring discussion. For most, golf experiences are relatively limited to public courses located within their local and regional areas. Personally, I was born, raised and have lived in the Mid-Atlantic Region my entire life, and as such, I’ve been fortunate enough to play some of the best courses in the area, like Bulle Rock (Havre de Grace, MD) or The Links at Lighthouse Sound (Bishopville, MD).
Part of being a fan of the game is sharing your stories of play and experiences at courses with others. When discussing other peoples’ favorite courses, whether public or private, local or international, it’s always a captivating conversation. There is just something so pure and true about listening to other peoples’ favorite holes and descriptions of courses; it’s almost as if any golfer is able to live vicariously through one another just by simply appreciating the game.
This month GolfDigest published an article titled, “Players’ Picks: Top 10 PGA Tour Courses” in which 81 Tour Pro’s were polled and asked to rank their favorite courses on the PGA Tour. Of course, we shouldn’t be shocked at all that Augusta came in ranked #1 — there is little doubt that the fascination and appeal of playing in The Masters provides a little extra motivation to considering Augusta the best course, but then again, watching the tournament in HD every April has certainly made me appreciate the course that much more.
