Tiger and Buick Part Ways
Last week, General Motors, Buick’s parent company, and Tiger Woods announced that they will terminate their 9 year relationship with 1 year remaining on the contract. With the way the economy is currently and the big 3 automakers taking the biggest loses in their company histories, one would think that GM decided to end this relationship to save money. The deal was reported to be worth around $7 million a year. While GM is trying to cut costs in every way possible, it was not the entire reason for ending the relationship a year early. According to Tigers’, agent Mark Steinberg, The decision to end the relationship a year early was “absolutely mutual.” Tiger wanted more time for himself with a 2nd child on the way.
“It was a combination of things,” Steinberg said. “Tiger was looking to gain some more time, and certainly it was an opportunity for GM to reduce its spending with everything going on.”
“Timing is everything,” said Larry Peck, golf marketing manager for Buick. “We’ve had such a great relationship with Tiger. It’s hard for us to walk away from that. But this frees up time for him. And it sure frees up a lot of money for us.”
In Tigers professional career, he’s only had 2 logos on his bag. When he turned pro in 1996, he had the Titlist logo on his bag until Buick won a bidding war in 1999.
Steinberg said he would “expect there to be some exposure on the bag” when Woods next plays. “I’ve got a few ideas, and we’re in the process of working through that,” He said.
I don’t know what logo will be on his bag but I do know that it’s way too valuable for it to be blank.
